Chris Chatain is looking to start Troop 20 groups to work on two merit badges:
1) Game Design
This new merit badge covers different types of games, indoor, outdoor, and electronic. Yes, it can include video game design.
The requirements are attached, but there is the opportunity here to do start learning a gaming program of your choice. One that some of our Scouts may have already seen:
Another good beginning game program is "Greenfoot"
I propose a group tackle the programming together, but the rest of the requirements can be done individually. I myself am not a heavy-duty programmer, but I'm betting our scouts could work through the self-teach materials for either program and come up with something reasonable.
2) Model Design and Building
I have a hobby of building and racing radio controlled sailboats with the Chicago RC Model Yacht Club that sails Sunday mornings at ponds in either Vernon Hills or near Touhy and I-294.
Of course the merit badge covers any model building activities, such as architectural models, but I'm proposing that participants build and customize their own wooden RC sailboat kit.
The boat I suggest is described at this website:
I've attached a document that tells of a middle school class building them.
They will give us a fleet purchase bulk discount, but I would expect the budget would still be around $300 per boat, including a good RC radio capable of controlling model airplanes as well.
Interested Scouts should get in touch with me via my email:
For each badge, I expect 3 or four group meetings over the winter months with the bulk of work being done by each scout at his home.
