Our troop went to Camp Oakarro for the inaguaral Potawatomi District Gourmet-Ree. 11 Dads, 27 scouts, and 4 Webelo guests with their dads in tow participated making Troop 20 by far the largest contingent there.
Saturday morning and early afternoon were spent at nine stations combining fun, cooking, and scout skills: climbing wall, egg toss, blindfolded waiter challenge, kitchen first aid, table setting/clearing, potato launcher, archery, licorice knots, and fire-building with limited materials. Each station was manned by scout volunteers from our area and featured instruction, team-building, and an interesting activity.
Saturday afternoon, it was time to execute the well-crafted cooking plans. The Stealth patrol used Dutch ovens to create a tasty stew and their enthusiasm at every turn was noted by the judges. The Turtle patrol made their world-famous mac’n’cheese in Dutch ovens and set up an elegant dining experience. The Bigfoot patrol enlisted the help of Mr. Fritts and reprised the Troop 20 Thanksgiving dinner by smoking a turkey on the grill. All groups were judged on patrol yell, patrol flag, appetizer, salad, entrée, vegetable, dessert, song, waiter and table appearance, and overall spirit.
Troop 20 won first place, and the judges were very complimentary of our cooking! Overall, it was a fantastic campout. Thanks to all who worked so hard to put this one together.
